Being mum, the work never stops
The work never stops, when being mum,
It just goes on with some pleasure, some fun.
The homework and the endless demands,
While we continue running life’s errands.
Cycling around the garden on their bikes,
Digging in the dirt, damaging my flowers as they like.
Jumping on my homely garden bench,
They also like to climb the garden fence.
The most fulfilling job in the world,
It is the hardest job I’ve ever held.
Long hours and a lot of stress,
However, of all jobs, this one is the best.
You sit as a child and imagine your future,
Tired of your teachers, surely it’s human nature.
If I knew then what I know now,
I would have worked harder, done better somehow.
A childhood enjoyed with my roller boots and climbing trees,
Riding my bike, playing in the long grass, I really felt free.
The times that I slacked on my work and projects,
Hiding in the toilets rather than attending mathematics.
The subjects I should have worked on that didn’t seem important,
My maths and my sciences I really should have worked on.
Sociology and psychology have not really got me far,
I once had dreams of singing, becoming a pop star.
Would I have succeeded? I will never know.
If I’d studied music and not let go.
Where would I be? What would I be doing?
If I had followed my dreams, instead of all the playing.
I could be a famous star or just earning a higher salary,
Needing to focus on my life, focus on me.
As an adult looking back now it is all too late,
I now have my children, my job, enough on my plate.
So, watching the kids now enjoying their time.
My frustration to help them, their futures are on the line.
Not wanting them to make the same mistakes as me,
I want them to feel fulfilled, connected and free.
To be able to live and do as you like,
Supporting your family with holidays, maybe go for a hike.
Weighing up the importance of play,
They are happy, just for today.
I am thankful that we did not have Roblox and Mine craft,
My little boy is hooked, he finds them a laugh.
We had the joys of Paperboy and Bomb jack,
The ZX Spectrum computer was our life hack.
For all the time that I spent on them though,
My books came first, my reading, it showed.
Now kids are spending so long on their tablets,
It’s not just their eyes that are being affected.
Pleading with my kids to just read a book,
To use their imagination, to open it and take a look.
Maybe as time goes by, my worries they will cease,
As the kids grow older their knowledge will increase.
Two clever kids with their whole lives ahead,
With a concerned stressed mum, willing them to do as she’s said.
Through life, we all make our own mistakes,
And right now, these kids are taking a break.
From singing on the bench and in the classroom,
Writing my own lyrics, it was over too soon.
Lack of confidence and life it soon took over,
All too quickly I learnt to surrender.
Giving in to what life held in store for me.
My husband and kids were my destiny.
The paid job I have now, I am very pleased to say,
There are times when people tell me that I’ve made their day.
So, in life, we can only do our best,
Right now, being mum is putting me to the test.
I love and adore them, they mean the world to me.
They melt my heart, they make me cry, they make me so happy.
Being mum is the best job in the world,
And despite my mistakes, I have the kids to hold.
Looking back through my life I’m focusing on the positive,
Life’s too short to focus on the negative.
So best wishes to all of you, all the parents out there.
We all have our lives and stories to share.
We have all learnt from the mistakes we have made,
From rules, we have dismissed and plans delayed.
Enjoy your children while they are young,
Support and encourage, enjoy helping with their sum’s.
Nurture and develop, their confidence will grow,
As your nurturing seeds will help them glow.

Very nice Marian – you’ve summed it up perfectly!
Fancy
I reckon life as a pop star wouldn’t have been all that anyway!
Just muddling through life
Yes, I’m sure it involves months away from home on tour.. the stress of writing lyrics or maybe singing someone else’s lyrics that you don’t necessarily like.. plus the world is doing your appraisal.. one bad move on your personal life and it’s all over the papers.. however if I was a pop star maybe I would have married Ryan Reynolds or David Boreanaz, Ha ha..completely different life! Think maybe the quiet life I have is calmer, easier and better. I can walk to town without having my photo taken.. X
Just muddling through life
Thankyou Linda!
