Is there intelligent life somewhere else in the universe?

    Our universe and Janet

Looking out of the window, listening to the other residents talking and laughing, Janet had had a long life.  Often thinking about the universe, she was forty-five when the first man walked on the moon. The day was significant for her as all the family was huddled around the television knowing a new baby was due to be born any day. Watching the rocket take off they all cheered, the excitement of later seeing them step out of the craft on to the moon’s surface was something they will never forget.

20 July 1969 – United States – Apollo 11 – the first manned mission to land on the moonThe two Astronauts – were Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin

    Theresa’s story

It was on that day, 20th July 1969, with all the family sat around, that my mum, Lisa, went into Labour. I was born that evening, a healthy 8lbs of fun and hard work. Now at fifty years old, I have my own children, no grandchildren just yet. My mother was young when she had me and my grandmother seems to have the secret to long life.

However, I have maintained an interest in Astronomy and the universe. I will never land on the moon, but I enjoy looking at it through my telescope. My daughter Rosie will often join me, admiring its craters, it often looks inhabited. As if there are creatures playing in the pools, we can only imagine what it really looks like. Through what we have seen on television the terrain appears to be rocky, not smooth. I would be interested to visit but I’m not sure whether I could really handle the trip.

Reading online I’ve learned that there are many technicalities with landing on the moon, it is not as straight forward as parking a car. There are soft landings and hard landings. For Humans this needs to be a soft landing, approach it too quick then it is a crash landing. The moon also has gravity, so this also affects landing and taking off.

    My visitor

With an interest in Astronomy, we like to look at the other planets and discuss the solar system and universe, but this is as far as we get. It’s a debate, a philosophical discussion of what is out there, is there intelligent life on other planets? We do not know. Do they visit us? Again, we don’t know, they could be walking among us, but we don’t know. However, there are times that I do question in my mind the words, alien or human? shapeshifter or human? Yes, I read to much Sci-Fi, but there are days that I question whether it is really is fiction.

I work in a small shop located on the main town high street selling bags and shoes, nothing exciting, but yesterday something strange happened that did make me think and question things. It was an ordinary cold Thursday in November and a man walked in, tall, big ears, bald, wearing shorts, short sleeve top, socks, and sandals. He looked out of place and said he was conducting a survey on shoes. Is this normal human behaviour? Who studies shoes? And if you did would you dress like him? It was cold outside, and the heating is on in the shop.

Mind racing, trying not to think of aliens and how large our universe is, I did my best to help him. Questions on, who is likely to purchase what? age groups and gender. It was the highlight of my day and we have discussed him since. Surely, he was a normal human being with bad dress sense on a cold day.

    Ziba’s story

It had been a long day and a quiet Sunday. We were all woken from sleep early one Monday morning when the ground started to shake.  It felt like what could be thunder. Having explored other planets and the enormity of the universe, we had learned about the weather on Earth but had never felt anything like this on the moon. The smell of fuel and the smoke was horrendous. Hiding in our craters we watched as the two men wearing white bounced out of the craft. They stayed for nearly a day, they talked on their radios and then left the following evening. We had a frantic nearly twenty-two hours hiding from them, not wanting to be seen.

We decided that we explore other planets around the universe, so why shouldn’t these humans be here? However, if they had seen us, I’m sure they would be wanting to study us as we study them.

    Men on the moon

They didn’t seem to do much, they bounced around for a while and then got back into their craft. Before this day and since we have found devices which we assume come from Earth. However, if they want to find us, we are cleverer then that. Humans must never know of our existence it is all part of a greater part of a higher plan.  Whilst Earthlings go about their lives they are always being watched. Is God a deity or is he one of us? Are we Aliens or are we God’s Angels watching over mankind? I’m not allowed to say but I do know that everything in life happens for a reason.

It is all part of a greater plan, man has to learn, and mistakes need to be made. Without mistakes, man could not move forward. At this moment in time we are entertained with Britain trying to leave the European Union, BREXIT they’ve called it. They have debated it for years now, will they leave? I’m not allowed to say but we have certainly placed some obstacles in their way, and we have a lady on the inside, keeping us informed of the situation.

Humans are interesting to study, they debate our existence, but for now, we are safe. If they recognised us amongst them, there would be panic, we might be locked in one of their zoos. I don’t think the human brain in 2019 could handle the existence of people who live on the moon, the planets, somewhere else in our shared universe.

    The shoe shop

Walking into Brearleys, I couldn’t help notice the looks that I received. I kicked myself for forgetting that humans feel the cold. I should have ensured that I was wearing warmer clothes, not shorts and short sleeves. Quizzing the lady on shoe habits, I think I got away with it and I bought myself some nice new trainers, I fit well into a UK size 10.  Our master, Lorcus, sets us tasks that we need to carry out. Visiting Earth, taking surveys and entering into people’s thoughts is all part of what we do. We would never want to harm a human though it has happened by accident. Rogue workers who have input detrimental thoughts into humans minds, ending in a crime which wouldn’t have usually been committed. These workers are dealt with severely as we are there to help teach lessons in life not to cause harm.

Visiting the care home (Theresa’s story)

After my experience with the bald-headed man, Rosie and I have decided that he was just an odd man with an interest in shoes. Why would he be anything else? There is only talk of Aliens living among us and I’m sure I haven’t just met one. Why would they be interested in our buying habits and shoes anyway?

So, I am now at the care home, visiting my grandmother with Rosie. She has said there is so much that we don’t know about the universe, why shouldn’t there be people living on the moon, hiding in the craters. She felt there were certainly others amongst us, maybe studying and conducting research. Her wise words to me are always,
“Theresa, love, you need to follow your gut. If you think something is wrong, then it probably is.”

I considered her wise words, she is ninety-five and full of wisdom and life experience. She’s only in the home because she is too frail to care for herself, but her mind is still there. We are wondering if she will reach one hundred. She is one of the eldest residents and right now she is fighting fit.

    Aliens

So, are there Aliens among us? And do you think you would recognise one? My gut says there was definitely something not right about my visitor yesterday. However, I guess it is something that we can only debate over. We will only really know if one reveals themselves to us and really why would they? How would humans react? I think they know, and if they do exist then that is why they are hiding.

Sitting here now, holding my Grand-mothers hand, she has now drifted off to sleep. Rosie and I are here happy in her company and enjoying observing the calm of the day. The care staff going about their work, supporting with toileting, eating and drinking. The little lady sat in her chair knitting, another drawing and a man with his head hung down, sleeping.

For now, we are all at peace in the world and that is how we want it to stay. If there is life on other planets and the moon, hopefully, they will never cause us harm. If we happen to find them, I hope we are just as civil.

Since the moon landings, man has learned so much, but for now no hard evidence as far as we know, of intelligent life. If there is life up there then they are doing a great job of hiding. If my visitor was from another planet, he appeared gentle and did not cause me any harm. I do wonder though, what will the next fifty years reveal?

A camping weekend and a new man

    Missing

Just as she thought nothing else could go wrong, the doorbell rang loudly on the bar. Freda looked up at the anxious woman and her friend and could now see the policeman in the pub. This was supposed to have been a relaxing camping weekend.

“What’s happened, Ruby”? I turned to the lady next to me.
    “Sorry, what’s your name?”
“I’m Julie and my son is Henry.” Looking at Freda I said,
“Henry is missing, do you think Rex can help?”
“He can fetch slippers, not sure about boys, we can try. Why are the police here?”
“That might be my fault, I think my friend phoned them to help find Henry.” I was surprised,
    “Wow, they came quick.”
“This is a small rural village, that’s Tom, everyone knows him.”
“Right, let’s see if Rex can find him.”

    Henry

We are on a camping holiday weekend in the New Forest. Freda and I had decided to take a break away from all the people we know. Freda is my best friend and has been unwell, she is having counselling for depression which is not helping. Both of us love music, and it helps us both lift our spirits. I manage my own business singing in pubs and clubs. I love singing and Freda will play the piano. Side by side both filled with a happy feeling to keep going.

Tonight, we had been singing in the entertainment barn on site, I had found a new admirer in Mark the barn manager. We had just finished our show and now we were helping to find three-year-old Henry.  Giving Rex Henrys jumper to smell, we now started the search. Walking out of the barn our small group followed the sniffing Labrador. Tail wagging furiously, he seemed to know that his role is important. Rescuing an old forgotten tennis ball from a hedge he then started barking excitedly. Tom walked behind the hedge and we heard voices. A few minutes later he reappeared with two children and a cat.

“Henry, thank god, who’s your friend?”
“Michael.” I showed him my open hand and he took it.

“Let’s go and find your mum. Freda, I’ll see you back at the tent”
    “Thanks, Ruby, Julie sniffed”.
    “That’s ok, I’m pleased we’ve found him”.
I walked back to the barn,

    Michael

“So, are you here with your parents?
“My dad brings me here, we live just down the road. I like to explore the campsite, there is so much to find in the evenings”.
    “How old are you?”
    “Eleven.”
“Okay, well thank you for watching Henry, but you should have brought him back to the barn.”
“He was only playing with Alfie the cat.”
“Yes, but his mum was worried. You knew he was safe, his mum didn’t.”

    “Didn’t think of that.”
We now arrived back the barn.
“Right, can you tell Mark that we’ve found Henry? You be careful with your exploring.”
“Okay, will do, thank you”. I watched him run back into the barn.

    Exploring

Walking back to the tent, I reflected. When I was his age I loved exploring too. Many a weekend spent exploring new places and having new adventures. Freda has always been my sidekick, and we have been involved in some messes. The worst was when we had decided to visit a local farm on our bikes. We had been there a number of times but this day we had taken dares on riding down a steep slope and not using our brakes.

Yes, I went first and yes, I fell off. I scraped my arm and acquired a wound on my elbow which would not stop bleeding. Somehow Freda managed to alert the farmer and he had loaded our bikes onto his trailer and drove us to the hospital. I still have a scar where the hospital stitched the wound. I can still see the accident in my mind and feel the pain.

Understanding Michael’s reasons for exploring the campsite I was now relieved to find Freda alone drinking tea.
“They’ve all gone, wow I’m tired,” she said.
“Yes, so am I, sorry, I’m glad that we can get some peace now”.
“Tomorrow we rest, yes? Then the next day home.”
“ I fully agree.” Having made myself some tea I now sat down and stretched out.

The evening was drawing in and the stars were starting to appear in the sky. After a long conversation on Astronomy and Philosophy, we finally gave up on the day and went to sleep.

    A visitor

The next morning as we were cooking breakfast, I had a surprise visitor. Looking up I could see him walking towards me.
    “Ruby, you’ve pulled.”
“Yes, I know, but not sure about long distance.”
“It’s not that far, give the man a chance.”

“Hi Ruby, I just wanted to give you this”. He handed me his business card. I took it hastily and placed it in my pocket.
“Thank you, we are hoping to rest up today and then drive home in the morning. We are just needing a break right now.”
“Alright well maybe pop into the barn later, it would be nice to see you.” Freda sat smiling.
“It’s alright Mark, she will. We will be in later.” His face now beamed,
“I’m looking forward to it.” He walked off smiling.

“Freda, why did you say that?”
“He likes you and you deserve some fun.”
“What if he wants more than fun?”
“Find out first, he seems nice.”

Sitting back in my deckchair I started to eat my now going cold bacon Sandwich. It would be nice to be part of a couple, but men brought complications with them.

    Mark

We spent our day resting and had an afternoon walk with Rex in the woods, and he enjoyed a paddle in the river.   We enjoyed the atmosphere of the beautiful countryside and the quaint village. Early evening, we took a walk to the barn and purchased two Coca Colas. Rex lay on the floor next to us with a bowl of water, enjoying the warm evening. Mark approached us and sat down.
“So, how far have you come to be here this weekend?”
    “Only Kent, not too far.”
“My parents live in Kent, so I travel down there often, especially for weekend breaks.” My heart jumped, maybe long distance wouldn’t be so hard. Kent might be a big county but from where I am to Dartford is only an hour’s drive. I started thinking of Lakeside, then I told myself to stop overthinking this.

    “Where are your parents?”
“Rochester.” Yes, about an hour away, but closer than the New Forest.
“So why are you here? I asked.
“I needed to get away and I fancied the peace and beauty of here. Rochester is a busy city.”
“True.” I can see the appeal of the beautiful countryside, I thought.

    A date

My mind started plotting again, he likes the country and I live in the country.  I live closer to Rochester then he does and not to far to travel on a weekend, he might want to move one day. I told myself to stop the planning, I needed to get to know him first. Pulling out his business card I had another look. An amateur job, possibly made through Vistaprint, but he had his own website and there was his email address and telephone number.
“So, if I texted, you would you want to meet?”
“Of course, let me know, I can drive down any weekend, I just need to ask Paula to cover for me and all will be fine here, I can be flexible”.

I had not expected this, we had come here to help Freda and now I almost had a date.
“I will text you when I get back okay,” Mark smiled happily.
“Looking forward to getting to know you, Ruby, I’d best get back to work Paula is staring.” I turned my head towards the bar and saw the older lady at the bar watching us amused.
“I’m looking forward to it too, “ I said. I was excited to realise that I really was.

We spent the rest of the evening enjoying the atmosphere of the entertainment barn. Leaving at 9 pm we had decided we needed an early night as wanted to get home tomorrow by early afternoon.

    Home

Packing the car the next day, I felt a little sad to be going home but excited at the prospect of keeping in touch with Mark.
“Come on then Ruby, time to go”.
Starting the engine we started to drive across the field, passing the entertainment barn, Mark was stood outside, I wound down my window.
“I’ll text you, okay, will see you soon.”
    “Great, please do, don’t forget.”
    “I won’t, bye”

Now driving away, I could see Rex’s head bobbing and Mark watching us leave in my rear view mirror, we had had a good weekend.
After a good journey, we were finally back in our home town. As we drove past the “Red Lion” I felt an urge to turn in.
    “What are we doing here?”
    “I need to check something.”

We walked into the pub and I checked the blackboard, as I thought James had written our names down to perform Tuesday night. It was now we heard shouting. It appeared that Rosie was still having problems with Freddie and her pregnancy. I stood there listening and thought. Oh, the complications of boys, I thought of Mark and a warm feeling went through me. What am I getting myself in to?
