The bucket of dreams and a rock star life
Bucket of dreams
Why do we dream? Why create aspirations and have hopes? As Josie sat staring out of the window, she felt sick. Thrown against the wall her hopes had been smashed to smithereens. Crushed after her excitement of hearing the thud from the letterbox.
As a child she wrote down her dreams. All her thoughts of being a star. Keeping them in a pink and white bucket, with pretty flowers. Her bucket of dreams. She had always known what she wanted to be. At school she often looked out of the window, wasting away the hours knowing that she was destined for greater things. She didnāt needĀ Pythagoras and his Soh Cah Toa.Ā She didnāt need to know about the Romans. Focusing on her music was her goal in life, thatās where she was headed. One day she knew that she would stand to applause in Londonās Royal Albert Hall. Rock Star Josie was her future. Why had everything gone wrong?
Singing
Every Friday she sang at the āDog and Bearā. The regulars loved her, some even came in just to hear her sing.
Thinking of her bucket of dreams she had added the love of her life. More the worst mistake of her life. Black hair down to his back side, matted into dreadlocks, she had always thought him sexy. Living the rock and roll life style, Steve was always surrounded by his groupies.
Two months ago, Josie had arrived home, sick of the sight of espresso and cappuccino and desperate for her rock career to take off. Working in a cafe had never been in her bucket. Now with her head thudding and straining to keep her eyes open, she walked into her flat. Throwing her coat on the settee, she shouted for Steve. Hoping he was there to take her into his arms and tell her it will all be okay.
The brunette
As the brunette appeared, in just her blouse with buttons half undone and scanty knickers, she knew what was going on. Her head now felt like it was on fire as the anger burned up in her.
āSteve, who the hell is this?ā
āHe wonāt hear you love, heās asleep.ā
āAsleep, itās only six o’clock.ā
āItās the smokes, whisky, and love. He’ll be out for a while, she slurred.ā
She could feel the rage,
āGet out of my flat, go,ā she shouted.
The brunette disappeared back into the bedroom and then returned with a pile of clothes. Silently she lit a cigarette and walked out.
Josie watched her, who was she? What was going on? Other than the obvious.
Walking into the bedroom, she shook Steve.
āWake up.ā
āChristine, stop.ā
āIām Josie, and I want you gone, now.ā
āLet me sleep.ā
āNo one cheats on me and gets to stay, you need to go.ā
āBut Josie.ā
āGo.ā She shouted now, why had she trusted him for so long? How many others had he been with? āIām going out and I want you gone when I come back”
āBut Josie.”
Ignoring him she grabbed her coat, she couldnāt bear to be around him and now walked out.
The letter
Two months later, she sat staring at the letter. Was this Steveās fault? No couldnāt be, he was the star. Picking up her tablet she typed, āRockhead Steveā. Top of Google there was the scandal.
āGirlfriend ruins rock stars careerā
Scratching her head, Josie could feel the fire burning again in her tummy.
What had she done? Other then ask the cheating rocker to leave.
Josie read, āIn a whisky soaked haze, Rockhead Steve, is no longer performing. Jealous lover, Josie should have thought of him before making her ridiculous accusations.ā
A reviewer had written āJosie must be on drugsā.
Hearing a bang on her door, Josie jumped, what now?
Before she had chance to get up and open it, her sister, Bernie and agent Lewis walked in.
āThis is bad Josie.ā Lewis threw todayās newspaper at her. Emblazoned across the front page, there was her photo.
‘Waitress Josie, who had been heading for stardom’.
Picking up her letter, she passed it to Lewis. Feeling her eyes starting too sting, she knew tears were to follow. Bernie now sat next to her and put her arms around her. Feeling her sisters warm embrace, she said,
āWhat about my bucket? all my dreams, I was going to bring down the Royal Albert Hall. Now that cheating rat has ruined everything.ā
A visitor
āJosie, we need to find that woman, any idea who she was?ā
āLewis, she was just some scank.”
Lewis waved the letter, āScank, or not, this recording company aren’t going to accept you on their label with Steveās fallen career pitched at your door.ā
āJose, we need to find her. Come on what did she look like?ā
āBrunette and a scank, I donāt know.ā
They all jumped as the door knocker banged again.
āIāll go.ā Lewis said.
Josie stayed cuddled up to Bernice, her career was in tatters and she now started shaking.
āSomeone to see you, errr, her name is Christine and sheās brunette.ā
As Christine walked in, Josie was not sure whether to be happy or slap her.
A plan
āSorry, I have seen todayās paper, you need to know some things. Iām going too help you sort this. It looks bad now, but I can help you.ā
Stunned that she had the nerve to come, Josie was not sure what to say.
Helping herself to the arm chair, she started talking confidently.
āIāve followed Steve for years and when he appeared in my bar, I thought all my Christmasā had come at once.ā
āSo, you chose to sleep with him?ā Lewis asked.
āHe’s āRockhead Steveā who wouldn’t?ā
Josie was shocked, okay she was right, she’s a scank.
āPoint is, if I go to the papers and explain what happened it will make you the shunned girlfriend. Surely anyone thatās been cheated on will be on your side.ā
āSteve, is a big name, why take Josieās side? In their mind itās her fault heās having his breakdown.ā
Getting up she looked at Lewis and said,
āWe will see about that.ā Pushing herself out of the chair she now said goodbye and let herself out.
āTea anyone?ā They were shocked at what had just happened and grateful for Berniceās offer.
A couple of days later a new report appeared in the paper. āThe innocent girlfriend and the loverā. The whisky consumed before the breakup, even talk of drugs. None of this was Josie’s fault.
Josie looked at her bucket of dreams and pulled āfind a good manā out. She didnāt need a man, Steve had nearly wrecked her career.
Another letter
Two weeks later, there was another thud on the door mat. Opening the letter her heart was thumping. As she read, she felt the tears streaming down her cheeks, this was it.
āDear Josie,
Firstly, sorry for our recent misunderstanding, please accept our sincere apologies.
We have listened to your work and would really like you to meet with us at our studios.ā
The letter went on, but that was all she needed to read for now. Looking at her bucket of dreams she said happily,
āNext stop, the Royal Albert Hallā.

So much of what you write is thought-provoking. On the surface this would be a story about yet another young woman who chose a guy by ignoring all the warning signs. It’s the layer beneath, how the culture is so eager to ‘blame others’ instead of accepting responsibility that I found interesting. I found the name Rockhead Steve amusing – I kept wanting to think of him as Bonehead!

Thankyou for your comment. Ha ha yes Steve is a bit of a bonehead. And yes you are right.. it is the culture to blame others..I’m pleased that you found it thought provoking.

This is fun, what a twist if fate. And a nice skank she was, after all. I love a great ending, especially after Iām a little mad about what happened.
Just muddling through life
Yes all turned out right in the end, Thankyou!
Gary
Great twist on the prompt Marian. I know itās been a while so apologies for missing out on posts from NaNo month onwards. As Abe says, layers within layers. Never give up on the bucket. Might not happen immediately and there will inevitably be trips and falls, but hold onto those dreams.
It is indeed thought provoking. Pretty fine story delivering the message too!
Just muddling through life
Thankyou Gary, I’m pleased that you liked it. That’s okay, life is very busy! Especially if doing nano. Yes important to not give up on our dreams..
Gary
I do indeed! Yours is the second with positivity this month…well the second Iāve read thus far. Never give up is a motto we should all carry… and, as King says in his On Writing book, a bigger nail to hang rejections on. That was also a very good thing to read in this vein too. If heād given up at that point then horror would be a more desolate genre.
Just muddling through life
Yes so important to not give up. I read that we need to aim for 100 rejections a year, on the premise that out of 100, someone will like our work. Yes we definately need a big nail!
Yes im glad that Stephen King didnt give up!
Gary
Ha, ha yes. Giving up is the easy option that will lead to longer term regret. You canāt get anywhere without trying. Very important message really.
Both King and JK had plenty of rejections so itās not a unique thing for new writers to experience!
Just muddling through life
I’m glad they didn’t give up. My daughter is sat here now reading the first Harry Potter on her new kindle. They are good stories!
Gary
Heartily agree and also inspiring to know rejections arenāt exclusive to new authors. Even established ones were new at one point. Great to hear your daughter is reading Potter too. I watched the films back to back over Christmas too š³
Just muddling through life
Yes I enjoyed the Potter boo ks more then I thought I would. I thought the film’s were good too,
Just muddling through life
I need to read the others, time is always an issue!
You Can Always Start Now
Again don’t know how you have time to pull a story together for Blog Battle, novel, blogs and life in general. Yeah to keeping working on dreams!
Just muddling through life
Thanks, yes our dreams are important!
Trina
Interesting read for sure.
