Tuesday mud and a Teddy bears picnic

Today was Tuesday again, ending in alot of mud. Yesterday I watched a Teddy bears picnic.   We have had a busy start to the week and right now I am exhausted with mum stress as it seems by 5 year old has put a hole her duvet.. I was trying to relax – also trying to sort out a blogging issue but that’s a whole other problem and now after my rant I now find myself alone. Am I happy? no, do I want to cry? yes, am I going to? no. I’ll just scream inside instead.

So here is my week, yesterday and today started the same, still the arguments before leaving the house.  Then racing the kids into school for breakfast club. Yesterday I had work, yet another busy day.  At the end of my day though I rushed to school to watch my 5 year old perform a Teddy bears picnic.  It was only about 2 minutes long but it was lovely.  She does ballet club on a Monday and they have been practicing with their teddy bears.  She remembered all her movements and did a really lovely job. All the children were amazing and I filmed it with my mobile phone.

Our world would be so different without our smart phones.  Imagine how many more photos or how  much video footage there would he of us if our parents had them.  I must have thousands of pictures, to many to develop and hours of video.  The closest my parents have is slides.  We used to enjoy watching slide shows.

Today has been a day off for me.  I was happy to leave them at school this morning, looking forward to my day.  I was planning on reading my book, this again didn’t happen.  When writing a blog there always seems to be something that needs to be done.  I still have about 50 posts that I need to rework for SEO and I am wondering if I have done the others right.  I think like with everything, blogging improves with experience and knowledge.   Managing photos and Word Press is all part of that.

This afternoon my 7 year old had foot ball club and our daughter, numbers. At 3.00 today it was raining hard, we thought well at least he wont come home covered in mud.   Well an hour later when I collected him  I was greeted by a very cold muddy child, shivering looking throughly miserable.  The photos here look better then the muddy mess that he really was.

We got home and he immediately went and ran a bath.  Why do schools do this?  I agree that it is good for them to get some fresh air and my boy loves football but not in the pouring rain.  This is the child who moans for his umbrella if he feels a splash of rain on his head. Also of course, all his clothes and plimsolls had to be washed, he has PE tomorrow, so they are now all drying on the radiators.  His top will not be ironed in the morning but at least it will be clean.  I just hope it is dry.

My 5 year old enjoyed numbers and she had managed to acquire a hair band from a friend.  Her hair is a frequent mess not helped by the fact that she will not brush it and she has cut it herself so many times.  I should really take her to see a hairdresser but there is not much they could do with it right now.  She can only just get it in a pony tail. It is either growing very slowly or her cutting it herself is keeping it short but it is mess as very thin as well.

We managed to get reading done tonight but it looks like my son’s River Nile homework will be handed in as it is.  At least he has done something, tomorrow we really must work on their spellings.

Bedtime tonight was a nightmare as usual and now it looks like I have a Care bear duvet to repair.  I am reluctant to replace it as she was climbing inside it when the accident happened.  I was not very sympathetic and at 9.00 in the evening she should be asleep not playing.

So here we are, end of Tuesday.  My reading not achieved again. Work on Pinterest not achieved either or my previous blog posts SEOd.  Tomorrow I have another busy day starting with a trip to the office about 20 minutes away. They have forecast snow tonight, I really hope that it stays away.  Like alot of people I hate driving in it.

I am now going to go, find daddy and try and get some rest before the morning arrives and the day starts again.  Bringing with it the stress and work of being mum.

  • The obligations of running a home and children
    creative writing,  Fiction writing,  Parenting

A sick child, a broken trolley and a long day off work

Jessica sat hands wrapped around her warm comforting mug of tea, wearily curled up in her recliner. Her day had been busy even though she had felt like a mouse in a laboratory experiment finding dead ends. She sat, pulling her warm blue blanket around her and reflected on her day.

From the long queue in the bank to finding a shopping trolley with a wonky wheel. To the phone call from school to collect Jacob as he had vomited in class and then the heavy Friday traffic. Her day should have been so much better.

A day off from work should be a good day. The obligations of running a home and children is far away from what Jessica had imagined it to be.  Years ago, before family a day off had meant not getting dressed and being able to watch television all day. Her money had been her own, there was no one else depending on her for clothes and food. Life before Michael and kids felt along time ago now.  She would not go back but she sometimes longed for the inner peace that she had once had.

The picture that a young woman has of being a mum is far away from the reality of it. A cute baby with warm soft skin. Adorable and always good for mummy. The sleepless nights, the arguments, the breast feeding and the stress, mum lives it all. Dad seems to have more of a choice but, then dad can’t breast feed so why should he get up in the night, that is what Michael had said anyway. Then the cloth nappies and little clothes and then once outgrown, do we sell the clothes or give them away?  Jessica had boxes that were just not selling, ever frugal she was reluctant to give them all to charity despite knowing that she really should.

Collecting Janie had been interesting as the school were not happy to see Jacob back. What choice did she have? Michael was at work and her parents were busy, so she had to take him with her. She was really hoping for no more sickness as she could not afford to not be at work on Monday.

Returning home had then meant demands for food. Jacob went back to bed so that was one child down but Janie was like feeding a bottomless pit, where did she get her appetite from?

After eating four pieces of toast and of course leaving all the crusts, they sat down to study the homework. Janie needed to draw a pirate ship.  Being 5 and easily distracted this was not an easy task for Janie. Sitting there with her pencil she began to scribble. Jessica watched frustrated, what her child had drawn was not a pirate ship, it was completely unrecognisable. She sat there and thought well we can either hand it in as a few lines or she could redraw it.

Mum too often comes to the rescue. As protective mummy bear she found it hard to watch her child struggle. She decided that her teacher would realise that mum had helped and was certain that she was not the only helicopter parent in the class. The ship was soon drawn and they had both coloured it in, homework completed.

The day was not over yet. Jacob now woke up crying and there was sick all over his bedding, meanwhile Janie still wanted her attention. Ignoring her cries she leapt up the stairs to her son and was soon remaking his bed. The bowl that she had given him to be sick in was empty, the fun and the joy of having children. Mopping up Jacob, consoling him and reminding him to use the bowl she then when back downstairs.

Downstairs she found Janie climbing up the kitchen cupboards wanting a drink. The child will not just wait for help, no she has to do it herself. Once she had made her a drink it was then the wrong one, why can’t she just be happy with what she has been given? Jessica thought.

She then rinsed the sick covered bedding and put it in the washing machine, relieved that Friday was almost over and tomorrow was the weekend. She sat planning it in her head, with Jacob being unwell maybe the weekend will be easier as long as he is not sick again.

A little later Michael returned home wanting dinner and told her that he had work again tomorrow.  He was completely unaware of how his wife was feeling.  A little annoyed but relieved at the extra money from overtime, she cursed under her breath. He was calm and relaxed after his day, unaware of the stress that had occurred at home.  Jessica had had enough, she was tired and knew the children would not eat much. She cooked some food and soon after followed the nightmare of bedtime.

Michael sat in his arm chair, too tired to help her. Jessica now tried to get their daughter to just calm down and shut her eyes. Jacob being unwell was quiet tonight. She helped her put on her pyjamas and clean her teeth. Then they read Janie’s ‘My Little Pony’ storybook together. Her favourite pony was Fluttershy.  Tucking her in she then kissed her goodnight.

Now sat cuddling her mug of tea, the house was quiet, it was lovely. Watching her favourite soap she allowed herself to relax a little. It was then that she heard a wail followed by crying. Jessica knew what had happened and really did not want to go back upstairs.

Grabbing a bowl she ran up the stairs and raced into Janie’s room. There Janie sat tears streaming down her soaking wet red face, ‘I’ve been sick’. Once again, the bedding needed changing. Very well practiced at it and annoyed with herself for putting the washing machine on too soon she changed all the bedding whilst Michael helped to calm down Janie.

This Is the less glamourous side of motherhood Jessica thought. The children bring so much fun and love into our lives but they are such hard work. She stood and watched Janie falling back to sleep, ‘I hate it when the children are ill’ she thought ‘ but maybe tomorrow might be a quiet day as long as there is no more sick’

Please note, this story is fiction, though I’m sure we have all experienced a similar day.  Yes I did draw the pirate ship in the featured image.

15 ideas to help keep your kids entertained

Note: This post contains affiliate links, so anything purchased through it will earn me some commission which will help to pay for my blog.  Note these links now work for America and the UK.

So how do you keep your kids entertained? they can be difficult and as a parent I am often feeling stressed.  Here are some ideas.

If you are a reader of my blog you will know that I have two wonderful but difficult children. Right now they are asking Alexa to play  David Bowie’s, Star man and dancing around the front room.  Yes this is one answer to keep them entertained, but if your children are like mine they are also jumping on and off the furniture.

So here are some other ideas for if you are stuck at home.

1.My daughter loves to be creative, so she enjoys the creative sets by  Melissa and Doug she can spend hours creating.  It is also something that I can do with her. My son can also join in with us.

    2. The children also love colouring books, there are also more complicated colouring books   for your older child (or adult) that could keep them entertained for days.

    3. My son loves his Thomas the Tank engine trackmaster train set, my daughter loves it too.

    4. They also both love Lego and 5. K’nex they can spend many hours playing with it.  A recommendation here is a toy storage bag which means that it is easier to gather the lego and K’nex together once the child has finished playing.  Another option is to use a blanket to keep it together and off the carpet.  I have stood on many a lego brick and it hurts!

    6. My children love playing on their tablets, so another idea is the Amazon Kindle fire for kids they come with a years subscription to kids unlimited. This can also be subscribed to and there is a trial for kids unlimited – UK, my children benefit from what it has to offer  Amazon Freetime, Kids unlimited – America

    7. Another idea is books, my son loves Roald Dahl. The Twits is his favourite.  Books are great because not only does it keep the children quiet, you can also cuddle up and read with them.

    8. Other ideas for indoors include  baking together (Kids cookbook) then you can enjoy your cakes or baked goods afterwards, relax and eat them together. Satisfying but also productive and constructive.

My children love to play outdoors when the weather is good.  To be honest they also enjoy jumping in puddles when it rains and making mummy upset by walking mud through the house. Not helped by the fact that we have beige carpets.

So here are some outdoor ideas,

    9. Planting seeds, my children love doing this, then watching the flowers grow.  Amazon have many different seeds so are worth having a look at.  They also enjoy gardening but  this can be stressful when they start pulling out plants that you want to keep.

Garden games is another option. Swingball is another family favourite. We can spend hours wacking the ball up and down the pole.

    10. My son loves his football but it often ends up over the fence in the neighbours garden. This then gives him the excuse to go over there and explore their garden, thankfully they do not mind.

    11. They also love to ride their bikes round and round.  However, we have a cycle path that we visit near by and spend hours cycling along it.

12, Other outdoor ideas include, walking through the woods. Often quiet and a lot of opportunities to learn about nature. Going to the shops is not so much fun as they want everything in site.

    13. Visiting the local library and choosing some books together.  My two love doing this but can be very noisy.  They do not seem to understand ssshhh.

    14. My children love visiting Castles and the Zoo.  So English Heritage membership is worth considering, if you live in the UK.

    15. Maybe also membership of the local Zoo.   I find that the children are much better behaved when their minds are occupied.  It makes life that little bit easier for us as their parents.

So are your children like mine? constantly needing your attention, needing to be entertained?

I hope this has helped and given you some ideas. For more see some gift ideas,
