    A time for accepting change

    Change

31st January 2020, a day for change.  As the country prepares to leave the European Union, we are going through our own time of change.

    School

After driving two children to different schools since September 2019, I finally had the phone-call yesterday that I’ve been waiting months for.

Today was my eight year old’s last day at school. I cried when his new one phoned me yesterday. He’s not happy but I’m relieved.  Their new school is walking distance from our home and has many positives over the other.

Watching his emotions as he is struggling with leaving the school he knows and his friends, I’m reminded of how much I hate change.  I have managed to ease some of his change stress with hopes that he will keep in touch with his friends.  He ate his dinner tonight whilst talking to one friend on Roblox.  I couldn’t stop him because it was the first time he smiled since leaving school.

Despite being just eight, he has had a girlfriend for about two years. She gave him some toys and wrote him some letters.  She will miss him, a heart broken eight year old.

Change is hard at any age.  My son, his girlfriend and friends will talk across social media and meet now and then.  Very different though to seeing each other at school every day.  The phrase you will make new friends doesn’t help.

    Is change a good thing?

Change is difficult for everyone but some people deal with it better than others. Some people welcome it.  There are some who will be celebrating leaving the European Union tonight.  I’m still not really sure what I think.  I fear the unknown, I like to stick with what I know. I’m not sure who to trust or what to believe, but it’s happening tonight and that’s it.

I am learning a new computer system at work.  It needed improvement, but some of the changes I’m not keen on. I will have to accept it but I have a number of fears. I feel my work life is about to get harder.

It could be the case that I have no need to worry.  The computer system might make things easier.  Brexit might be good for the country.  My son might go to school on Monday and really enjoy himself.

    Are there positives to change?

Sometimes once new systems are learnt or people adjust to them than life gets better.  I will need to rethink how I do things at work to use my time more efficiently.

Some change we choose.  Starting a family is a huge change, one that we entered into happily but it has not been easy.

My son changing schools is good, but right now, for him he is struggling.

So how do you deal with change

    1. Try and understand the reason for it.
    2. Not to panic, which I am good at.
    3. To take it one step at a time, if you can.

So, tomorrow is February 1st, just another day.  Will my life be any different?  Not straight away.

Monday will come and my son will start his new school.  Any anxieties he has today will hopefully diminish.  Over the weekend he will talk to his friends on Roblox and he will be alright.

The new computer system is happening.  I have to learn it., understand and accept it and try think positive thoughts.

How do you deal with change?  Do you like change?  It’s something I keep having to accept, but it never gets easier.

My Son, reading and life poetry

    End of January

We are nearly at the end of January 2020,

Kids back at school and work has been busy.

Working on my life and working on my reading,

With my writing anthology, I’m finally succeeding.

With thanks to my writing group, the story is done,

A demon, a hospital, ghosts, the lives that are gone.

I’m hoping it’s liked enough, to be printed in a book,

Where people will read, drink tea and have a look.

Now as I sit here, my son is not at school,

With a sore tummy Wednesday, he’s nobody’s fool.

I was hoping that he would be back at school today.,

But rules say no, so he gets to quietly play.

    Son unwell

He has done some reading, he read some Harry Potter,

But very soon he wanted to be back on the computer.

I thought we could cuddle up and maybe watch the film,

But he’s happier driving cars around a little screen.

Taking my daughter to school they like to run around,

I stood with my Kindle trying to stand my ground.

This last week I have travelled with  Debra Purdy Kong,

Her Casey Holland books have got me, you can’t go wrong.

    My reading

Casey and Lou, Summer, Stan the buses,

Mainland transport, the drama, the losses.

Book six is released on the 12th February,

Pre-order today, for Casey’s life and rebelry.

The continued balance of writing, work and life,

Ensuring that I read, adding to my strife.

I like spending my day off alone,

Safe in the knowledge it’s just me at home.

As I sit here, typing on my bed,

I have things racing around my head.

Frustrated with the noise of the computer,

The roar of cars, I need to be a better instigator.

Maybe after dinner, we can do some work together,

His fingers are typing quickly on the computer.

Years ago, I wrote poems on a typewriter,

Back then we didn’t know that computers were our future.

    Life

Life has changed over the years,

We have all evolved along with our peers.

It’s not just the youngsters enjoying online shopping.

I met a ninety year old, for his Tesco order, online he is hopping.

So, today I’m going to go and make some tea,

Maybe take my son downstairs with me.

Enjoying his sick days, he is making the most of them,

Watching him relaxing, he isn’t unwell often.

I’m lying here trying to stay awake,

The house needs a tidy, my sanity’s at stake.

The washing is racing around the washing machine,

The pile of dishes is bad but really not obscene.

So back to the life of a working stressed out mum,

I know there are jobs I need to get done.

Hope you have all had a good week,

The weekend is here, now fun to seek.

Include the work of Stevie Turner

    Ritu Bhathal – Poetic Rituals

Ritu’s – debut novel – Marriage Unarranged is available for preorder – for release on 9th February

    Lucy Mitchell

    Graeme Cumming

    Dan Malakin

    Janet Gogerty

    Esther Chilton

    Darlene Foster

There are many others that I still need to read.

    Kindle Paperwhite

Kindle for kids – I have ordered this today for my daughter’s birthday.  My son has said he doesn’t like reading.  I’m hoping that seeing his sister read will make him want to read more.  She has set up a book corner in her room.  I’m wondering if a Kindle will be easier to read then a hard back or paperback.  She had a load for Christmas including Nevermoor.

If you have tips for getting a reluctant reader to read, then please do tell me in the comments.

The bucket of dreams and a rock star life

    Bucket of dreams

Why do we dream? Why create aspirations and have hopes? As Josie sat staring out of the window, she felt sick. Thrown against the wall her hopes had been smashed to smithereens. Crushed after her excitement of hearing the thud from the letterbox.

As a child she wrote down her dreams. All her thoughts of being a star. Keeping them in a pink and white bucket, with pretty flowers. Her bucket of dreams. She had always known what she wanted to be. At school she often looked out of the window, wasting away the hours knowing that she was destined for greater things. She didn’t need  Pythagoras and his Soh Cah Toa.  She didn’t need to know about the Romans. Focusing on her music was her goal in life, that’s where she was headed. One day she knew that she would stand to applause in London’s Royal Albert Hall. Rock Star Josie was her future. Why had everything gone wrong?

    Singing

Every Friday she sang at the ‘Dog and Bear’. The regulars loved her, some even came in just to hear her sing.

Thinking of her bucket of dreams she had added the love of her life. More the worst mistake of her life. Black hair down to his back side, matted into dreadlocks, she had always thought him sexy. Living the rock and roll life style, Steve was always surrounded by his groupies.

Two months ago, Josie had arrived home, sick of the sight of espresso and cappuccino and desperate for her rock career to take off. Working in a cafe had never been in her bucket. Now with her head thudding and straining to keep her eyes open, she walked into her flat. Throwing her coat on the settee, she shouted for Steve. Hoping he was there to take her into his arms and tell her it will all be okay.

    The brunette

As the brunette appeared, in just her blouse with buttons half undone and scanty knickers, she knew what was going on. Her head now felt like it was on fire as the anger burned up in her.
“Steve, who the hell is this?”
“He won’t hear you love, he’s asleep.”
    “Asleep, it’s only six o’clock.”
“It’s the smokes, whisky, and love. He’ll be out for a while, she slurred.”

    She could feel the rage,
“Get out of my flat, go,” she shouted.
The brunette disappeared back into the bedroom and then returned with a pile of clothes. Silently she lit a cigarette and walked out.

Josie watched her, who was she? What was going on? Other than the obvious.
Walking into the bedroom, she shook Steve.
    “Wake up.”
    “Christine, stop.”
“I’m Josie, and I want you gone, now.”
    “Let me sleep.”
“No one cheats on me and gets to stay, you need to go.”
    “But Josie.”
“Go.” She shouted now, why had she trusted him for so long? How many others had he been with? “I’m going out and I want you gone when I come back”
    “But Josie.”

Ignoring him she grabbed her coat, she couldn’t bear to be around him and now walked out.

    The letter

Two months later, she sat staring at the letter. Was this Steve’s fault? No couldn’t be, he was the star. Picking up her tablet she typed, ‘Rockhead Steve’. Top of Google there was the scandal.
    ‘Girlfriend ruins rock stars career’
Scratching her head, Josie could feel the fire burning again in her tummy.

What had she done? Other then ask the cheating rocker to leave.

Josie read, ‘In a whisky soaked haze, Rockhead Steve, is no longer performing. Jealous lover, Josie should have thought of him before making her ridiculous accusations.’
A reviewer had written ‘Josie must be on drugs’.

Hearing a bang on her door, Josie jumped, what now?
Before she had chance to get up and open it, her sister, Bernie and agent Lewis walked in.

“This is bad Josie.” Lewis threw today’s newspaper at her. Emblazoned across the front page, there was her photo.

‘Waitress Josie, who had been heading for stardom’.

Picking up her letter, she passed it to Lewis. Feeling her eyes starting too sting, she knew tears were to follow. Bernie now sat next to her and put her arms around her. Feeling her sisters warm embrace, she said,
“What about my bucket? all my dreams, I was going to bring down the Royal Albert Hall. Now that cheating rat has ruined everything.”

    A visitor

“Josie, we need to find that woman, any idea who she was?”
“Lewis, she was just some scank.”

Lewis waved the letter, “Scank, or not, this recording company aren’t going to accept you on their label with Steve’s fallen career pitched at your door.”
“Jose, we need to find her. Come on what did she look like?”
    “Brunette and a scank, I don’t know.”

They all jumped as the door knocker banged again.
    “I’ll go.” Lewis said.

Josie stayed cuddled up to Bernice, her career was in tatters and she now started shaking.
“Someone to see you, errr, her name is Christine and she’s brunette.”

As Christine walked in, Josie was not sure whether to be happy or slap her.

    A plan

“Sorry, I have seen today’s paper, you need to know some things. I’m going too help you sort this. It looks bad now, but I can help you.”
Stunned that she had the nerve to come, Josie was not sure what to say.

Helping herself to the arm chair, she started talking confidently.
“I’ve followed Steve for years and when he appeared in my bar, I thought all my Christmas’ had come at once.”
“So, you chose to sleep with him?” Lewis asked.

    “He’s ‘Rockhead Steve’ who wouldn’t?”
Josie was shocked, okay she was right, she’s a scank.
“Point is, if I go to the papers and explain what happened it will make you the shunned girlfriend. Surely anyone that’s been cheated on will be on your side.”
“Steve, is a big name, why take Josie’s side? In their mind it’s her fault he’s having his breakdown.”
Getting up she looked at Lewis and said,
“We will see about that.” Pushing herself out of the chair she now said goodbye and let herself out.

“Tea anyone?” They were shocked at what had just happened and grateful for Bernice’s offer.

A couple of days later a new report appeared in the paper. ‘The innocent girlfriend and the lover’. The whisky consumed before the breakup, even talk of drugs. None of this was Josie’s fault.

Josie looked at her bucket of dreams and pulled ‘find a good man’ out. She didn’t need a man, Steve had nearly wrecked her career.

    Another letter

Two weeks later, there was another thud on the door mat. Opening the letter her heart was thumping. As she read, she felt the tears streaming down her cheeks, this was it.

    ‘Dear Josie,
Firstly, sorry for our recent misunderstanding, please accept our sincere apologies.

We have listened to your work and would really like you to meet with us at our studios.’

The letter went on, but that was all she needed to read for now. Looking at her bucket of dreams she said happily,
“Next stop, the Royal Albert Hall”.
