When is something an old item? # Sunday Stills

    What is old?

Does something have to be over so many years to be considered an old item? Maybe it depends on what the old item is.  My car is old, but she was first registered in July 2010, so is she really old?

The following things are not old, old,  but they are old to me.

    old paddingtom

    Paddington Bear

Paddington was purchased somewhere around 1997.  I was with my ex when I impulse bought Paddington and Dylan the rabbit from ‘The Magic Roundabout’.  We wore them on the zips of our leather jackets.  Paddington now looks after house keys., I’m sure he is relieved to no longer be worn daily on a coat.

    old car

My first car – Ford Fiesta

This was my first car on holiday in Somerset in 2001.  It was a G registration which means first registered in 1989. It was an automatic which was later written off by my ex, but that is another story.

    old plates

    My dinner set

This dinner set was purchased somewhere around 1997.  I saw them in Fenwicks and I had to have them. I phoned my ex who was in the pub at the time and asked him to carry them home for me. He was not happy. but as you can see they are still here today.  Some of them have cracks and chips and others are in perfect condition.

We were in a charity shop about two weeks ago and my son saw these plates.  They were £8.00 for six plates.  I was tempted out of sentimentality to buy them, but yes I resisted.  We don’t need more old plates.

    old dish pumpkin pie

    My Grandmothers pie dish

The Pumpkin pie here is not an old item, this is October 2019.  However, the dish was my Grandmothers. So, I am not sure how old it is, but its possibly just as old or maybe older then the things above.   I think of my Grandma every time I bake with her dish.

These items are all old to me.  I’m sure if I explored more around my house I would find older.  My house was built in the 1970’s, is that old? for a house I think that is young.

    So, what is old?

I am possibly middle aged if I am lucky enough to live to eighty six.  Does that make me old?  There are days where I certainly feel old.  A friend posted on Facebook this evening about her sons twenty first birthday.  I remember the day she announced she was pregnant with him.  That made me feel old.

I have met amazing people in my work day in their nineties.  I had a little lady a few days ago telling me she is not old.  She was ninety and painting a peacock. If I get to ninety I hope I am well enough to paint.

So what is old to you?  Does it have to be antique? or just a little worn?

    A weapon for murder

    A man in the garden

Staring out of the window, Marsha dropped her favourite mug. Steaming hot coffee swept down her legs as she saw the hooded figure in the garden with a long knife. Cursing at the pieces of china on the floor, her heart was pounding as she jumped across the kitchen and turned the key in the back door.

Sitting on the kitchen floor, she reached in her pocket and dialled. Listening to the usual message, the figure was now banging at the back door.

“Hello, police, there’s a man with a knife trying to get in.”

“Okay, your address please and we’ll send a team out.”

Giving her address she struggled to talk.

    “They’re banging on the door.”

“A team are on their way.”

    “Mum, what’s going on?”

“There’s someone out there with a knife.”

“Flippingheck, it’s chucking it down with rain and that’s Freddie.”

“Freddie. Why the hell is he in the back garden with a machete.”

    “Oh mum, machete.”

Opening the door, Freddie fell in.

“My god, Stella, it’s raining cats and dogs, I was drowning out there.”

“Freddie, why the knife? What’s going on?”

    “It’s cool, Muffin found it.”

Crying, Marsha now shouted, “Take that bloody thing out of here, get rid of it.”

    “Hello, police”

“Sorry officer there’s been a misunderstanding” Freddie said.

“Sir, please put down the machete.”

Putting it on the kitchen floor, he was confused. “Sorry, Muffin found it as we were walking over here”. Stammering now he said, “I didn’t mean to scare Marsha.”

Another officer wearing gloves, picked up the knife and placed it in a large bag. Shaking his head, he looked at the Jack Russell, wagging his tail. He sealed the bag and handed it to his colleague.

    Two weeks earlier

Terry sat staring at his pint, wishing his problems away with beer. Not sure how to tell Marsha about what was happening, the threats just kept coming. As the cold froth slipped down his throat, he shook replaying the previous evening. The shouts echoing around the dark alley as the brown haired man had grabbed and slammed him hard against the wall.

    “Your money, now.”

    “I’m broke.”

“Boss wants his money, you know the consequences.”

    “I have none.”

“You have till tomorrow, then ‘Big Red’, will be after you. You know what that means.”

He knew who ‘Big Red’ was. He was notorious for getting the job done, in any way possible.

Sat watching the bubbles in his beer, he heard a shuffle behind him.

    “You, Terry?”

“Whose asking?” His heart hurt his chest as he turned around and saw the man with a bald head and snake on his right arm.

“You’re Terry, come outside with me.”

Picking up his beer, he reluctantly got down from his stool. He didn’t have the money and now started praying.

Baldie nudged him towards the door.

“You won’t need your drink, walk.”

Tripping out of the bar, he now saw the gang and van stood outside. Terry started to shake again, he wanted to be left alone with his drink. He could feel the world closing in on him as two men appeared and bundled him into the van. As the engine rumbled, he could feel his hands being bound behind him.

What now, where were they going?

“Right Terry, boss wants a word with you.”

    “I’ve already said, I’m broke.”

“Well this won’t end well then.”

    Red

About an hour later. Terry found himself in front of an almost seven foot, red headed brute. As he pulled out the long knife, Terry knew what was happening next. There was no way out of this. His mess of losing his job and talking to a lone shark had ended here.

Why hadn’t he just talked to Marsha?

Hands bound he could hear the jeers as the brute slammed the shiny metal knife into him. He was aware of the blood oozing out as the world turned black around him.

This was it, he couldn’t pay up, so ‘Big Red’ had taken his life. His life in exchange for a few measly thousand pounds.

    Terry missing

It was after Marsha had phoned the police, that his body was found in Fort Wood, an hour from her home. Death by stabbing, a cruel grisly death. She had no idea what had happened, suffering a huge shock her nightmares had started.

Seeing Freddie in the garden, she had thought that they had come for her. Walking across her garden brandishing a machete had been a stupid act. Sat with a police lady and Stella, she agreed that counselling would be helpful.

Meanwhile the police interviewed Freddie, needing to know where he had found it. Taking them into the garden and down the long path into the woodland at the back, he proudly showed them the thick bushes it had been lying under. The detective spoke into his radio.

“Sarg, get the dogs here will you? We need to check there’s just a machete.”

    The bodies

Twenty minutes later the dog van appeared. Freddie watched fascinated as four Alsations, were put on leads and led into the Wood. Ten minutes later he heard frantic barking and then radio activity.

“We have two bodies here, buried, we need to tape of the wood now.”

Freddie was shocked. Finding the machete, he didn’t think about Terry. He had been with Stella a short time and was known for being thoughtless. His hobby was computer games, war and fighting.

Why hadn’t he thought of murder?

    The gang found

The police were aware of ‘Big Red,’ but till now had no hard evidence against him. Having retraced Terry’s steps, they found he had lost his job and spoken with the ‘Brown Fox’ pub. They had a description of the bald-headed man that had taken him away that night.

From there they had found his gang and had since been searching for the murder weapon. It appeared they now had it. Once identified they hoped to have all the evidence complete to lock the gang away for a long time. The body count was rising, and Terry had not been the first.

    Relaxing and reflection

Putting her feet up on the settee, Marsha looked at Stella.

    “Are you seeing Freddie tonight?”

“I’m not sure mum, I’ve been wondering, what sort of man thinks waving a machete is fun?”

“Oh love, put it down to computer games. I hope he’s learnt his lesson. Hopefully, if he finds a machete again, he will phone the police immediately.”

    “What do I do mum?”

“See him again and take it slowly. Get to know him. Life is too short to live by what if’s. If he hadn’t found it, the gang would still be killing people. He’s a hero really.”

    Stella thought about this.

Maybe, she would see him again. Give him the benefit of the doubt. They hadn’t been together long, and she didn’t really want things to finish before they had really started.

Losing Terry, they had learnt that life can be cut short at any time. It is important to live in the now. Both relieved that his killers had been found they comforted each other that they were safe. They now knew why he had been killed and were reassured that they were not next.

‘Baby Blue’ a row and suspicion

    The fight and ‘Baby Blue’.

I woke to a bright and sunny morning after our fight the night before. We don’t argue often, but Freda is finding it hard to get over the break in and the loss of ‘Baby Blue’.
Throwing her accusations around had ended in a shouting match. Mark had pulled me away, telling me not to listen to her.

Freda’s music has not been found and the police have given up looking for it. Burglary is not a major concern. To Freda it is like the sky has fallen down. She feared that one day she would turn on the radio and hear her song.

Would it bother her to hear ‘Pink’ sing “Baby Blue’?  I decided that, yes it would. Not even ‘Pink’ could have it. It was Freda’s, after all she did write it.  Now the morning after, I gazed over at Mark. He had been decent, no pressure. He had woken me this morning with a nice mug of Tetley.

How could Mark have anything to do with this? We have been together four months and he has always been kind. There’s no way he could be involved in this mess. Telling myself to not be suspicious, I watched as he sat messaging on his phone.

His face was screwed up as his fingers flew across the keypad. I wondered who he was talking to but didn’t ask. I watched as he raised his eyebrows, it looked like he was having an argument. No nothing suspicious here.

    * * *

    ‘Baby Blue’

Freda sat watching morning television. She wondered if the BBC would have enjoyed ‘Baby Blue’. She had always longed to be a guest star. Playing the piano on their stage whilst Ruby sang it.

Now the opportunity had gone. Whisked away by Mark. She wasn’t sure how he had done it but was certain that he had.  Lying on the settee she felt so sad it hurt. A pain in the pit of her stomach a constant reminder of what she had lost.

Could she write something better then ‘Baby Blue’? She wasn’t sure. Feeling it was a one off, she could not shift the doldrums.

Rex disturbed her thoughts with a loud whine. Walking over to her with his tail firmly between his legs. If his mistress isn’t happy, then neither is he. Stroking his head, Freda told herself that she needs to get over it. ‘Baby Blue’ is gone. Now was the time to pick up her A4 pad and start write something else.  Trying to shift the pain in her stomach, she told herself that tea would help. Fighting the urge for something stronger, she now put her feet on to the floor to find the warmth of the welcoming kettle.

    * * *

    Mark

“Come on Ruby, let’s go to the park.”
    “I should check on Freda.”
“She’s alright, come on let’s walk.”
    “I’ll message her.”
“I know you care about her, but you can’t fix this.”
“No, but she needs to know I’m on her side.”
    “But she knows that.”
“After last night, I don’t think she does.”

“Well I hope you don’t believe her. I haven’t got ‘Baby Blue’.”
“Yes, I know, but I don’t want her doing something bad. She gets depressed, and this could push her over the edge.”
“Okay, well send her a message and then we’ll go for a walk. Come on, let’s get some fresh air.”

    Typing on my phone,
‘Hi, I’m still here for you. Hope you are okay x x ‘
I couldn’t help thinking that we should be going to see her. Not ignoring the situation and walking in the park. Mark’s phone rang now. I watched as he cut it off. What was going on? He stared at his phone, a little too long for it to have been a wrong number.

    Messages

    “Right Mark, what’s going on?”
    “Nothing, come on, let’s go.”
    “Who have you been messaging?”
“No one important, just my brother, nothing to get excited about.”
“I’m not getting excited, just I don’t think you are being completely truthful.”
“Look you and Freda are a rare talent, that’s all I’m saying. Come on let’s go.”
I turned this over in my head. Was he guilty? Did he know who had taken ‘Baby Blue’? What was I supposed to think?

Hearing my phone now, I pulled it out of my pocket. The message read,
‘Baby Blue has gone. I’m going to write something else.”

    I messaged back with,
‘Please look after yourself, I will see you soon. Please take care.’
She responded with the thumbs up emoticon, I sent her a smiley face.

“Okay, well she is writing again. Come on let’s go for that walk”. I grabbed my coat and started walking to the door. I looked back at Mark. What was he thinking? He was still looking at his phone. What really was going on here?

    * * *

    Mark

Mark stared at his phone. What had he done? This was a complete mess and his mate was a complete idiot. He liked Ruby and he didn’t want to lose her. His stomach had been churning since seeing the man running away. Now the whole thing had escalated. Afraid to tell Ruby he now needed to escape and walk.
