To all those Shielded from COVID -19

This was written in the early morning, 12.30am after a stressful day. It was the 22nd June that we learnt that the government would be pausing shielding on the 1st August.  If you have read my previous post, (A need to be liberated, cry for freedom), you will have learnt how hard I’m finding it.  We are all shielding because of my husbands medical conditions.

    The shielded

We are the many shielded, stuck at home today,
Hoping that this virus will please just go away.
Some of us are anxious, worried and alone,
While others, wait for carers and for loved ones to phone.

In the UK over two million, with all different conditions,
All relying on deliveries to support our need for nutrition.
Through the people writing on Facebook, those that can go out,
We are here stuck at home, what are they talking about?

    Social distance

Advice of social distance, two metres please stay away,
Now they want to reduce it, that was the news today.
Shifting the rules for the economy, yes, it is a worry,
But what about the R rate? This virus isn’t in a hurry.

If it can get you easier, well it certainly will,
Reducing social distance may make more people ill.
As we watch people wear their masks, we are hoping for the best,
For the R rate to continue down, our worries need to rest.

From last week all our wondering if will the shielding be extended,
And here we are now, that painful wait has ended.
Is 1st August, back to work, just a little bit too soon?
We will watch the figures now, it’s only 23rd June.

    The goal posts

The goalposts they keep changing, is our misery soon ending?
When will this vaccine appear? How soon will it be pending?
It needs to be reliable and they need to get it right,
For now, I feel dubious, is the end really in sight?

They talk of pausing shielding, they might un pause it later,
For all of us, how long will shielding really matter?
As they research through our illnesses our different conditions,
Our lives are upside down in our different situations.

    Medical conditions

Who will be long time shielded? Which condition does this virus love?
The scientists do their research as we pray to God above.
Please I hope this virus will soon just go away,
I want to go back to freedom, no worry to go out for the day.

So, to all the shielders, stay together and stay strong,
Continue supporting each other, you really can’t go wrong.
Here we are together, together through thick and thin,
For all of us, we must not let this Corona virus win.

A need to be liberated, cry for freedom

    A need to be liberated

What is wrong with me? After reading through Facebook, again, I’m stressed and I’m almost crying. Due to my husband’s medical concerns, we have been shielding since March. Staying at home and not allowed to go anywhere. I went out last week, I happily met a friend and the children, their school friends. Since then I have worried daily that we might have caught the virus.

How do you handle this? I’m a fairly anti-social person. I’m happy to not have to go out. But what about when I want to go out, but can’t due to fears of infecting my husband? Trying to protect him, we have only been out once. Is this really fair on the children?

We have a human need to be liberated. My husband wants to go out too, but really, I’m hoping it gets extended. Yes, I’m going mad but I’m worried that the numbers are still high. He wants to get his hair cut. I tell him there’s no point putting himself on a ventilator for the sake of his lock down hair.

    Other people

Other people are happily meeting up. Some are forming social bubbles. Us, we are stuck together, just us four. It’s a good job we get on but right this minute I want to cry.

The need to liberate myself, the want to walk the kids to the shops and visit the library. The human need for freedom. Instead there’s a virus that could potentially take daddy away from us. Yes, I’m scared and even contemplating cancelling our holiday in October. It’s in the UK, but are we really going to be able to relax? I don’t think so.

In March we were unwell. We hoped that we had the virus and my husband was struggling with breathing. However, the swab test was negative. Now, the antibody test is out but it appears just as unreliable as the swab test. So, what is the point? People have been shown to have a positive swab test and then a negative antibody test. Others a negative swab and then positive for antibodies. I’m not sure what this means, but could it suggest that having it doesn’t necessarily mean immunity?

    Difficult time

This is a rubbish time for many people. For us it has meant arguments as very little alone time. Home schooling and working from home. I sit in the car once a week and run the engine. I will also drive her about half a mile up the road and back. Yes, I’m saving money on diesel.

Regularly checking forums and Google for updates on shielding is not helping my anxiety. Why couldn’t the government just tell us what their plans are? We have been coming to our own conclusions and it is scary.

Imagine being told you can’t go out. Then told you can go out, but once a day, but only with your own household. Then faced with the prospect suddenly that shielding is over, and you are back to work.

We are both worried. The children are happily just arguing about home school and my daughter has been learning about Sea Cucumbers. We watched a video on them today, they are absolutely disgusting.

However, if you are interested in buying some (anything purchased through my blog will earn me a small amount of commission which will help pay for my blog.) Here is a link for Sea Cucumbers.  They are expensive but considered a delicacy. Ewwwwwww imagine barbecuing them! If you have eaten sea cucumber please do let me know in the comments. What did they taste like?

    Home Schooling

COVID 19 has brought with it, for me some positives. Where some parents are hating home schooling. I’m enjoying helping my son. However, my daughter leaves me wanting to cry as she will protest and say no. On a good day she makes me very proud. On a bad day, anxious and worried. It’s hard not to worry when it’s all over Facebook, Netmums and the news about children falling behind. They then talk of extra school in August. My seven-year-old might need it, but my nine-year-old has been working hard every day for weeks. He’s working an average of four hours a day. I couldn’t ask him to do any more than he is.

So, here we are. Stuck together until things dramatically change. Will the government extend shielding? I hope so. Will it be until the R rate is down to a level that we are comfortable with? I don’t know.

I’ve had comments from those that have been going out throughout this pandemic. Lack of understanding of how hard it is when you have been isolated for so long.

I know I need to stay away from Facebook. Stay away from the happy people seeing each other after weeks apart. We have a while to go yet before we can be fully liberated. I don’t think I will completely stop worrying till we are vaccinated and known to have active antibodies.

    Loss of freedom

This virus has taken away our freedom but it has meant more time together as a family. I’ve also been able to play a part in the children’s education that I never thought I would. Researching subjects in order to try and pass that knowledge on. I’m not a qualified teacher but I’ve tried my best and I hope I’m doing a good enough job.

I’m hoping by Christmas this will be something we are talking about rather than still living through. The children need to return to school and I want to see friends without worrying, and read Facebook without feeling my eyes watering up.

I know there are others with far worse stresses, but for now I just want my husband and family to be safe and the anxiety to go away. Liberation will for now, just have to wait.

How have you dealt with Lock down? Have you been shielded? or able to go out maintaining two metre distance of course.

Hopefully this nightmare will soon be over for all of us.

A ghost train to another world

    The ghost train

Shivering I pulled my fur lined coat tight around me. The empty platform vibrates as the echoing sound of the train approaches. Why do I do this, day after day? I hate the underground. Matt calls it the ghost train as it’s empty. Like clockwork at 7pm every evening it collects me and takes me to the station a few miles down the track. I have no need to be scared, but tonight I am. For the first time since Matt started his stupid joke, hearing the train made me nervous.

Seeing it approaching, I can’t see a driver. Why can’t I see a driver? What’s happened to him? “Stop it Rach, pull yourself together”. I say it out loud, ordering myself to stop the nonsense. Looking around, the platform is empty and the train has its door open waiting for me to alight. This is the same train, that I get every night, why am I worried?

Feeling physically sick now and cursing Matt, I step into the inviting carriage. Sitting down on a hard bench with the words Lucy 4 Will engraved into it, I tell myself again that it’s just an empty train and I will be home soon.

It used to be packed with people, then steadily fewer and fewer caught the 7pm service. Now it’s just me and I don’t understand why. Where did they all go?

Stopping at the next stop, my heart sinks as the door opens and a man with a large hat and long coat steps on. I heard again, “but Rachel it’s a ghost train”. Shut up Matt, I thought.

    The stranger

Shuffling a newspaper, the man now sat opposite me, crossed legged, and the train appeared to speed up. This had to be my imagination surely?

It was a few minutes later as we sped through ‘BlackBerry junction’, my stop, that I now started to cry. This was it, this was the end, why had I not listened to Matt?
“Rachel, don’t be scared”. Looking up I found the stranger staring at me. His eyes looked kind under the brim of his hat. “It’s okay, this is a new world”.

“A what? How do you know my name?” I stammered. I was feeling disbelief, surely this wasn’t happening. This was not a ghost train.
“I’m Morrigan, this is the train to ‘Grestown’.”

    “To where?”
    “You have been chosen Rachel.”
“Me? What happened to the other passengers?”
“They are still here, but you can’t see them and they can’t see you.”
This sounded like something straight out of a fantasy novel. This can’t be real.

    “Why me? What about Matt?”
“Rachel, this will be hard but I’m just going to tell you.”
I could feel my heart pounding, what was I about to learn? What had happened? Why was this happening?
“Two weeks ago, do you remember you and Matt went to Castle Beach?”
Worried now I said, “Well yes, course. We got caught in the tide together. It was romantic”.

I thought back to Matt holding me tightly as the waves caught us”. We had been alright, and had been relieved to step back on the beach afterwards.

    A revelation

“Rachel, here is what really happened. You were caught in the tide and dragged out to sea. You are both in a coma in ‘Bradford Hospital’.
    “I’m dead?” I was shocked.
“In a coma. This is an in between town now, everyone is expecting you.”

“Where’s Matt? Has he been chosen too?”
    “No Rachel just you”.
This had to stop, this was crazy. I’m not in hospital in a coma. This Morrigan isn’t really here talking to me. Soon I’ll be home with Matt, all will be okay.
As we reached a station reading ‘Grestown’, my heart sank again. This can’t be true.
“We are here Rachel, come on, take my hand?”

    Grestown

Holding on, I stepped off the ghost train. Surprised now to see cobbled streets and masses of people waiting for me. This was unreal, it had been a normal day despite being ignored by people. I guess now I know why.  I just want Matt, not some strange new world. Who were all these people? Were we all dead?
A small boy came bouncing up to me.

“Rachel, Rachel, thanks for coming.” Looking down at his happy face I wondered again, why me?
Morrigan took my hand again, come and sit down.

“Every one hundred years someone special is chosen to come here and be our queen. You will pass away in your own world and exist here forever; this will be your life now and these people will adore you. They know your story; they even saw what happened and have watched you in hospital. You were chosen to come here. This is not an accident.”
I wasn’t sure what to think.

    “Are you all ghosts”?
Morrigan laughed, “kind of, but we are on a different life plain then the rest of the world.”
“Okay, so in this world plain, where are we?”
“We are in your home town, Bradford. Right now, in the other plain, people are going about their day to day lives. They are not aware of us.”
I thought about this. “is this why sometimes people report seeing ghosts?”

    The plains

“There are points where the two plains meet and there have been incidents of us stepping through. Those on the other plain, can’t step through to us but we can go through to them. This is closely monitored though as scaring people is not strictly allowed. It’s more to help loved ones that are grieving us.”
I thought about this and liked his explanation.

    “Morrigan, is Matt dead?”
“We knew that you would ask this. You were chosen to be our queen, but we know how you feel about Matt.”

Hearing a voice behind me, my heart leapt. “Queen Rachel, will you be my bride, together forever after being caught in a tide?”
Matt was all I wanted. This was like a fairy tale. Looking away from Morrigan, I saw him.

“Rach, I was brought here by Ramona over there.” I looked and saw a young woman looking at us. “How did you get here?”
I laughed, “The ghost train and Morrigan”.
    “The what train?”
I laughed, of course we had both been in a coma. These last two weeks had been in my head. But somehow, I had been riding the ghost train as usual. Just today Morrigan had found me and brought me here.
I have heard stories about active brains in comas but maybe this was the time to say goodbye to our old lives. I had Matt right here and these people had chosen me.

    A decision

“Matt, do we stay? What do we do?
“Rach, it’s either back to the usual working stress or we live here forever. From what Ramona says there’s no pain or illness, we are already dead”.
    “Morrigan, where is the Queen?”
He smiled kindly. Queen Ramona, my wife, is here. We have been here one hundred years now, it’s now time for her to step down”.
Matt and I stared at each other. “So, you don’t age?”

“Why would you, you’re dead. You will stay exactly the way you are forever”.
“Matt do we do this?” I thought of our families, would they really miss us? We could visit them at any time.
Matt took my hand, “the way I see it, we stay here forever, stress free and don’t ever age. Or we go back, have stress, age and die of some horrible disease. Our families are already grieving us. Come on Rach, let’s do this.”
“Okay, Morrigan we are in, just call me Queen Rachel.”

    Bradford Hospital

Watching the couple lying in their beds, Mrs Jenkins cried as the machines started to scream as simultaneously they flat lined. Nurses flooded into the room to rescue them but it was too late. Twenty minutes later Rachel and Matt were declared dead.

    A month later

Declared as a drowning accident, Mrs Jenkins, Rachel’s mum, was not sure how she would get over losing her daughter. Every so often though, she was sure she could smell her scent. This gave her comfort as if she was watching out for her and she hoped that this was true.
