The last year, 2019 and Christmas

    January 2019

I was going to do a post reflecting on this last year, with my favourite posts. I then realised that this would be a long list.

So here are some posts from January. Here is my first post of 2019 – New years day poetry

The mannequin and the slippers poetry

Friday and a day at home – reading this I can see that the children have not got any easier.

New year poetry – December 2018

What have I achieved this year?

I’ve added many stories and poems to my blog.  I’m hoping that my writing is improving.  I have had two stories published this year on Spillwords.

    Featured Christmas day poetry

    The love of a mother

I am now writing a Paranormal story for an Anthology.  I scared myself a few night ago reading about the ‘Lake of sulphur’. I needed to know what Demons smell like.  The answer is Sulphur.  The smell of rotten eggs.

My novel is at about 70 000 words and I’m  struggling with it.  For now I have taken a break.  I started it in March, so I have a very long way to go. I’m guessing I have many redrafts to write.

In June I started my second blog www.marianwood.com and soon after I started my monthly newsletter.

    Friday and Christmas

So, how has your Christmas been? Mine has involved the usual Christmas stress and the best bit was seeing the children enjoying their presents.  I’m glad that its now Friday 27th.

However it did include profiteroles and cream, which were lovely.

    profiteroles

The Christmas tree has lost some baubles, every year it looks more unwell. The kids rooms need their new toys tidying away. I spent most of boxing day cooking and I have most of a turkey in my fridge. Todays dinner was turkey curry.

    Rainbow Science

We now have food colouring on the kitchen table. Put newspaper down before your child plays with it. Both children are loving these.
There are other experiment sets in the series.

    Sewing kit
My daughter was sewing Christmas night. She loves being creative.

    Scalectrix
Providing hours of fun as the cars race around the track.

    Barbie
The doll that girls of all ages love.

    Star wars Pyjamas
As a star wars fan, my husband wanted these from the children.

    Slippers
    Always an essential.

    Books (Train to Impossible places)

I have bought these for my daughter, but I intend to read them as they look good.

Today we have been puzzle building. However, the children quickly got bored of finding border pieces. Leaving me determined and alone to carry on. We have tested out the  puzzle roll mat and it does seem to actually work. Maybe the children will unroll it themselves tomorrow and carry on, I can hope.

My six year old was taking baubles of the tree today. She told me that Christmas is over and it’s time to take the Christmas tree down. If she had said that this morning I would probably have taken it down.  I’m being told that we need to buy a new one. Reading reviews I’m not sure if there are trees significantly better to justify binning my poor tree.  I bought it years ago., (possibly 2003, yes it is old)

    Christmas holidays

Just a few days left, back to work on Monday.  Tomorrow if I get motivated I might make the effort to finally walk to the town and return the library book.  Both children have loads of reading after Christmas.

The year is almost over, what else can I fit in to the last few days?  2020 is just around the corner.  My next blog post for just muddling through life will be next year.  Time is going to fast!

Black Friday and Christmas presents poetry

    End of November

It’s the end of November and I’m sitting here,
Wondering what has happened to this year.
Another year gone, another year has raced,
Time is flying by at a very fast pace.

Here we are now, it’s Black Friday again,
Time for shoppers to try and get a bargain.
The shops they are busy with the ringing of tills,
As people run up their credit card bills.

The roads they are busy with delivery drivers,
Being met by eager happy purchasers.
Goods being left in sheds, porches and wheelie bins,
The pressure is rising and patience is wearing thin.

    Black Friday

So, what have I bought this Black Friday time?

(Note: if you purchase any thing through my affiliate links, I will earn some commission which will help pay for my blog).

I wanted new Ugg boots, my feet they now shine.
My old  Ugg Cardy boots, the soles were a mess,
My new purple Bailey boots I can wear to impress.

    boots black friday

My new stripey slippers they keep my feet warm,
My bank card is resting, my money is gone.
The childrens demands, forever for toys,
Scalectrix and dolls for happy girls and boys.

As you know my daughter’s room is often untidy,
I saw this big Unicorn, not part of black Friday.
The unicorn in the supermarket it’s staying,
Despite the temptation to just keep on buying.

    Presents

    unicorn

I bought my children new storage boxes to hide,
In the hope they would tidy and put their toys inside.
My son has done this, just as he’s been told,
My daughter, no difference, her bears are exposed to the cold.

    Amazon

Amazon are offering their new Alexa deals,
The Kindle Fire it is now priced at a steal.
Do I buy the kids new kindle devices?
The kids make me mad, regardless of the good prices.

Trying to get the children a good  book to read,
Maybe a Kindle reader is actually what they need.
The stress and the joy of buying the right presents,
Do you buy all they ask for? disappointment can be intense.

For now, what I’ve bought has been constructive,
Making their presents fun and interactive.
I’ve bought them both puzzles and a  green puzzle mat,
Helping them find the pieces to match this and that.

    green mat

Christmas is under one month away,
With much anticipation of the great day.
One good present to purchase, is an Amazon voucher,
They can buy what they want, and receive it a little later.

So, these are just some present ideas,
Trying to reduce your Christmas present fears.
Others include, K-nex, Barbie and Lego,
For online shopping, Amazon is the place to go.

So now I have the Christmas cards to write,
Now to write them, Christmas is in sight.
I also have the present wrapping left to do,
Have a happy Christmas to all of you!

Sunday and 10 tips to help ease mum stress

Note, this post contains affiliate links both for America and the UK. Anything purchased through it, will at no extra cost to you, earn me some commission that will help to pay for my blog.

Sunday again today and I can confirm that mum stress is a real thing! We all know its real but today I have been moody and grumpy.  I even marched upstairs with the bin liners to tidy away my 5 year old’s bedroom inside them, She cried and screamed but unfortunately for me she has still not tidied her room.  Have you been at the point where the children push you so far that your body physically hurts?  After a very stressful morning on Wednesday I arrived at work and soon after my hand and arm went numb.  Later in the day I had to go to bed early as I had a pounding headache.  Stress is real and is not something to be taken lightly!

So what can we do to ease the mum stress and pressure? Most things seem to fall on us.  In this house daddy tries but it is me stood here laying down the law. All my threats get wiped out by daddy giving in.  I want to take away the Ipad and Ipod long term but daddy could not take the tears and stress of the kids not having them.  They keep them quiet. My daughter does enjoy the Amazon Kindle for Kids, note trial for America Kids Freetime and Amazon Kids unlimited,  I would recommend this over an Ipad with Minecraft and Roblox.

So how did today evolve? well daddy had a really bad night.  He woke me a few times with his coughing and spluttering.  It was then 5.30am when our son wanted daddy to get up.  Exhausted he obliged, error here, daddy has always got up with him, so now our son expects it.   Once I got up I found homework still not started and rooms not tidied.   Yesterday was spent on the gadgets with the agreement of homework tomorrow. My argument yesterday was to just get it done then there is no need to worry about it.  I got ignored the gadgets over rule.

This afternoon I managed to get the kids to help tidy the front room.  Standing here screaming and getting upset.  The amount of toys that appear down stairs is incredible.  These are the kids that complain that they do not have anything.  I am forever tidying up  lego  and K’nex, the tiny pieces are forever ending up in the vacuum cleaner.  However, despite my mum stress and anger their rooms are still a mess, the front room is better then it was.

Both kids have now completed their home work and they have both read.  I learnt today through my 5 year olds homework that Blackbeard the pirates real name was Edward Teach, we gave up listing the ingredients that are in Grog.

Our kids will rarely do as they are told and answering back is frequent.  We have tried reward charts and  reward stickers,  these worked for a little while.  Then  daddy started to pay them to help.  Our 7 year old liked this idea, however he was being paid for jobs that he really should do anyway.  Paying him to keep his room tidy was getting too much.  He then lost the money because he kept playing with it.  Over time I have found it and the money is now safely in his bank account but he is no longer being paid to help.

So as a mum of two very demanding children what do I recommend to try and ease the mum stress.

    1. Trying to get the children to behave, reward charts and stickers as above are worth a try.  Paying pocket money is also worth trying but remember you are in charge not them.  So do not let your children black mail you.  Our 7 year old tried and did not get very far with me.
    2. Trying to find time for you and daddy or your partner, this is important.  Once the kids are asleep maybe make time for a date night, or cuddle up with a film.  You need time to unwind as yourselves rather then constantly being mummy and daddy.
    3. Try to make time for you. Stress is very bad. Try and find time to read a book or enjoy your Kindle. Amazon also offer a trial of Kindle Unlimited – America and  Kindle unlimited – UK
    4. If you enjoy listening to books then Amazon are also offering a trial of  Audible – America and Audible UK.  If you are in America and have a stressed friend who enjoys listening to books, then Amazon America offer Audible gift membership
    5. Worth looking at if you are a stressed mum in America are Amazon home services, I do not think this is available in the UK.   In the UK there is Amazon Fresh which is for groceries but you need to be an Amazon Prime member, (Link for Amazon Prime America)
    6. Other ideas are to relax and put your feet up with a nice mug of tea or coffee
    7.  Walking  can help to relieve the mum stress.  To just get out of the house and walk, preferably alone.  Taking time for yourself.
    8. I started writing my blog due to my mum stress. Sometimes it helps to write.
    9. A long bath (if you can) with bubble bath,
    10. Maybe listen to some relaxing music,  Trial – Amazon music unlimited America and Amazon music unlimited UK

So end of Sunday, its now 10pm and I have now calmed down.  I had a bacon sandwich for tea followed by ice cream, not the best diet but chocolate would have been on the menu too if we had some in the house.  The children make me mad and can have me hiding in the bathroom as it is the only room with a lock on it.  Daddy is now snoring in his chair.  Yes this is my life.  I need to find my kindle and stop typing, I have my book still to read beside my bed.

Despite the mum stress though I am sure all mums would agree that we do love our children very much, but wow why do they have to be so hard?

Back to work tomorrow and the usual routine of the school breakfast club and usual work day for me.  I am now going to go, try and get some rest, maybe even read some of my book if I get to bed early enough.  Try and get some rest and relax so I am ready for tomorrow and being mum.
