After the night before

15402909264651685068890Everyone is quiet as I sit here, all watching television or playing on their electronic gadgets. The jobs for mum grew last night as daddy dropped ice cream on  the Flokati rug in the bedroom and somehow a blueberry got squashed under it.  How do I wash a Flokati rug? It says I can, with cold water. Is fairy washing powder gentle enough? I have not got a clue. They have forecast rain today, but once washed it will be to heavy for the washing line and it is white so I don’t really want to hang it over my garden bench.  See if it’s not the kids in my life, it is the man and why did he take ice cream and blueberries to the bedroom anyway?

Last  night my lovely daughter threw some things down the stairs and knocked over a drink, like a skittle. Consequently soaking my Hug Rug by the front door. The Hug Rug is fine to be soaked, but again I will now need to wash it. They say machine washable but the last Hug Rug I washed in the machine got ruined. So hand washed from now on and more work for mum.

At about 11.30pm I thought I would go to bed. I got out of my chair and walked past where we hang the car key. If you have read ‘Monday thoughts’ you will know that I had to go to the shops last night to buy milk. Well the car key was now missing, being a worrier I could not go to bed till it was found. Hunting everywhere, I went and woke daddy in my panic, where the heck is it? I looked around the car, the footpath, the kitchen, the shopping bags, the dustbin, the kitchen drawer, the fridge, the freezer all the places you can think of, I checked. Daddy then offered to continue hunting whilst I went to bed, but he was exhausted to. I then put a plea for ideas on Facebook and amazingly at 1am people did see my post and sent an emoticon, which was nice, but I think to tired for suggestions. Possibly if they had got ideas, we would have already have checked them.  So finally at 1.40am, I started looking at the toys on the kitchen table. My son has a lorry with Mr Kipling written on it that he puts toys in. I shook it, there was something inside. I struggled to get the door open, easy for a 7 year old, not so obvious to mummy. As it opened my heart leapt because there was the missing key. Which child was to blame for that one? Finally we could go to bed.

If anyone is wondering why I didn’t just relax about it, it must be in the house somewhere, and use the spare key.  Well that is currently at my parents house for safekeeping and is about an hours walk away. I did not fancy that today, a walk is good but not when it is forced on you. Next time I am at my parents I will be collecting my spare key and putting it somewhere where I can remember it here.

My 5 year old came and climbed into bed again this morning. She was crying because daddy would not make her breakfast. He was trying to sleep, late nights make early mornings difficult. We hugged and I asked her about the car key, she very proudly said “I did it, ha ha” “err not ha ha, that’s why daddy won’t make you breakfast he is tired and mummy isn’t moving either.” She then left to find herself some bread, my kids are both very good with the toaster. Such a great invention the toaster especially when you don’t have a working grill.

The man came yesterday to look at my Cannon oven and he said that a micro sensor had stopped working. It is 5 weeks old, not 5 years old, I asked him for a new oven and he said he would talk to his office. About an hour later my mobile rang and we are getting a new oven tomorrow. I hopefully will finally be able to have cheese on toast again.

Today we have a family trip to the dentist, but we have the stress of parking the car first. If we had not found the key it would have been a long walk, but we would not have had the hassle of parking. An expensive afternoon, the kids are excited but I’m dreading it. I’ve hated going ever since I fainted in the chair. The dentist didn’t touch me, he just said we need to take a tooth out and that was me gone. I didn’t have my tooth out that day, it was done a few weeks later under conscious sedation which was great. One minute the dentist was talking to me, the next I was walking out of the room and being driven home. I now warn them to watch what they say to me, fainting is not fun.

Anyway I am now going to go and find my coffee and weetabix, I think it could be a long day ahead. To much to do and all part of the joys of being mum.

I love your writing style. this was a joy to read even though I sincerely doubt it was for you to live it! I completely understand the key thing, and I think many people would too. But I am a Londoner born and bred so I’m used to growing up with security being a priority. Now living in Scotland I’ve come to realise that what I’ve grown up with and what others usually do/think is entirely different :P.

That IV sedation for dentists is brilliant. My fiancé is the same as you with dentists (minus the fainting, he’s just terrified of them) so when he found out he could be knocked out and just walk out not remembering anything he was tickled pink! Glad it all went well in the end 🙂

Thanks Heather for your lovely comment. Yes we had a huge panic. Yes I am very squeamish, concious sedation was a big relief. I hate going to the dentist now so completely understand your fiance. Scotland is a long way from London…
