The man in the moon and the Solar eclipse

It was nights like this that I could feel the earth’s serenity. The calm stillness, the beauty of the moon. Watching the darkness through my telescope recognising that there is a wide universe out there. Infinity around me, up and all around.

Astronomy has always fascinated me. I would spend hours with my grandmother watching the stars. When I was a child, she told me a story about a man in the moon. He lives in one of the many craters and is in charge of the planets and space. One of God’s many angels keeping the solar system in order.

When she died my dad told me that she was now sat with the man in the moon. Helping to keep the universe, the moon and the stars in check. I often imagine her sat with a harp with the other angels. Maybe bossing them around, taking charge. It gives me great peace to think of her up there.

Today I have my own little girl. A little girl who loves to hear about the man in the moon. The night’s when she should be sleeping, she will come and find me lost in the world of stars. It is a story she has told her school friends and her teacher. Mrs Francis did not seem so keen on the idea, a teacher with very little imagination. Rosie was insistent that the man existed. Mrs Francis was quick to tell her that this was childish nonsense. Yes, I had a very upset seven year old.

Helping Rosie to believe and showing her the moon’s craters. Talking about the magic and love. The beauty of the universe and space still unknown. How far does space go? does it really go forever?

Is the universe captured in a ball that we are not aware of? Are we part of an experiment? How accurate was Douglas Adams with ‘Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy’? No one has ever travelled to the end of the universe, how could they? Will they ever? How much is out there that we do not know? The universe is a subject you could philosophise forever and still not know the answer, only theorize.

My husband Greg loves to look at the stars and planets with me. He likes my Grandmother’s story but doesn’t believe it. Saying it is a fairy tale he will just dismiss it. To me if there is a God who made the heavens and earth, why wouldn’t there be an angel on the moon? Sounds like a good vantage point to me.

Sitting here now, watching the night sky, I feel a pull on my sleeve,
    “Mummy, is he up there?”
    “Yes, Rosie, always.”
    “Can I have a look?”
“Of course.” I helped her on to my stool and she looked through the telescope at the moon.
“I see him, I see him.” She said excitedly.
“He is always keeping watch, now why are you awake? it’s late.”

    “I couldn’t sleep.”
“You have school tomorrow, come on.”
    “Will you read to me?”
“What do you want to read.”
“The man in the moon” I smiled I knew exactly what book she meant. Written by William Joyce and one of her favourite books. Lifting her down, I carried her back to bed. I had only read five pages before she closed her eyes and then I heard her quiet snoring. Placing the book back under her bed I went downstairs to the kitchen.

(Please note anything purchased, will earn me commission at no extra expense to you, which will help to pay for this blog).

Putting milk in a mug for my evening Horlicks, Greg walked in.
    “All okay?”
    “Yes, do you want Horlicks?”
    “Yes, is Rosie alright?”
“She’s back to sleep now, helped by the man in the moon.” Greg smiled he knew what I meant.

Now adding Horlicks to the hot milk, I passed it to Greg and then heated milk for myself. Sitting at the kitchen table we now talked about our day. It is late but we are guilty of conversations late at night when we should be going to sleep.

The stresses of the day, working, cooking, cleaning, family duties. Then school and Rosie. At the end of the day, we are both exhausted. Those couples that fit everything in and still find quality time for each other are lucky. I find myself so worked up with daily life that sitting here with our Horlicks is the most we can manage.

Drinking my Horlicks and scanning my Facebook newsfeed, I caught an article that interested me. There was going to be a total solar eclipse in the next two days and we were in the right location to see it. This would mean that the Sun’s Corona, the aura of plasma that surrounds it, will be visible to the naked eye. It is amazing because it extends so far into space from the sun and stars. I quickly thought about it, it was forecast to happen on Saturday.

There is so much to learn about space and events such as the Solar eclipse. I understand very little about the Sun’s corona, just that it is the pretty fuzziness around the sun.

I smiled to myself thinking about angels in space. I assumed there was no one guarding the sun because they would get burnt. However, they might have super-powers, they are angels after all.

Despite my fascination with astronomy and space we have never travelled to see an eclipse, we have always watched from our garden. Greg got up and went to the drawer for the solar glasses. We are prepared knowing that you should never look directly at the sun.

    * * * * * * * * * * *

Saturday soon arrived and we are now stood in our garden with our glasses admiring the eclipse and the Corona. As we stood and watched, Rosie asked,
“Do you think the man in the moon is watching as well?”
“Yes, darling, I’m sure he is up there admiring it as well, he is in charge up there.”

“Mummy, he is doing a good job, it is beautiful.”
“Yes, it really is”. I thought about the beauty of the universe and its intricacies. There is so much that we still need to learn and so much that we can admire and enjoy. I held Rosie’s hand and gave it a squeeze, she looked up at me and squeezed mine back. Happily watching the days amazing spectacle.

    Writing, researching and life

This last week has been busy as I’m trying to write 10 000 words in March for Chapter Buzz. I reached my goal last night 16th March. I wonder if I could get to 20 000? So many writers participate in Nanowrimo (National Novel writing month) where they write 50 000 words, I know that right now I could not do this. Maybe if I did not work and my children were a lot older this would be achievable.

So, I am now writing The Secret Time Warp developing my short story. Writing science fiction is harder then I imagined and I know I have covered too much too soon. It needs more depth and I need to do some research. With time travel though a lot is theories. It is trying to not rewrite what has already been written. Mine has got to be new with new ideas.

Professor Hawking has said that we cannot travel back in time as it is against the laws of physics, we can only go forward. My time tunnels go both ways. I recently read about a group of scientists in Moscow who used a Quantum computer to reverse time. I have a lot to read and hopefully by the time I have finished I will have a greater understanding of time travel.

My 5 year old was star of the week on Friday. She has been working hard and wrote a lovely story about going for a job as a knight. Her teacher asked her if she got the job and she said yes. My son learnt to swim on Thursday. He tells me that he can now do breast stroke. The first stroke I learnt was the crawl and I did not learn as fast as him. This was only his third lesson. So, both children are doing well. Though today we have a refusal to do homework and reading but we will get there.

We are currently living in a building site. The need for a new bathroom finally fulfilled with a nice new white bathroom suite. The mess of decorating but knowledge that soon our living space will be greatly improved. My dad has taken off the old tiles and is replacing them with new.

I am now trying to find some new navy curtains.  I do not want black out, its my bathroom not bedroom. Too many are blackout and then others are only available on line with a delivery charge. Why do shops complicate it? I want to walk in, choose my curtains, buy them and walk out. Having seen them and touched them. Rather then buy online, hate them, then try and send them back or take them back to the shop.

We live walking distance from Dunelm but searching online I cannot see anything suitable. I am contemplating going for a walk and checking if there is anything else in store.

I am now wanting light blue bathroom paint. I’m not sure if Dulux is any better then the cheaper products but we have pink paint peeling off the walls right now! They recently closed Homebase near us. I am regretting not thinking ahead and buying it before the shop closed. So, I need to do a trek across town to B and Q for bathroom paint. It will be worth it once it is finished, but it is a lot of work for all involved now (especially my dad).

So today I plan to get back to writing my book and time travel research. We also have homework to complete. My daughter is writing about castles and knights. My son is learning about transport and travel. I have school uniforms to iron and life as usual. Yet another busy Sunday. So what are your plans for today?

100 days blogging, what I have learnt

I started my blog in October 2018,  100 days later, today, I am exhausted. I would not recommend blogging for 100 days straight but it has honestly been quite an experience.

As I submitted my first blog post, Saturday morning, I did not expect to put as much work into it as I have. I also did not expect to read as many fantastic blogs and meet (virtually) as many lovely bloggers.

My reason for writing my blog was to improve and develop my writing. Having started writing a novel and feeling a bit lost with it I thought blogging might help. I also considered that if I had people following and reading my blog then my name will already be known if I ever do get my book finished and published.

Since starting my blog my Facebook page has grown and there are people actually reading my writing. Before I had to force my husband to read it and then any criticism of it was just based on his opinion.

I enjoyed it so much that in December I decided to go self hosted with Lyrical host and I would highly recommend them.

I have learnt in the last few days that people have many different reasons for starting a blog. I have been looking at my progress and then reading others on Pinterest. I have now realised that I should not be comparing, I have blogging friends who simply blog for the community and friendship, they have no interest in making money from it.

Talking to a lady on one of the many Facebook groups about my blog, I was advised it will not make money as it is not giving anything to the reader. Now maybe this depends on the reader. If someone is wanting to read poetry or a story they are possibly not asking Google. They will possibly be searching in the Word Press reader just like I have done.

The same lady also said that she would not be interested in any of my Pinterest pins due to the images being to personal. Interesting feedback and yes I think she was right. I am now learning Canva and using that for my pins rather then pinning straight from my blog. I’ve also realised that the posts that might make money need to be separate from the others as they are maybe the ones that someone might save.

    What I have learnt
    1. I have written some posts that are more giving to the reader and I will continue to in an effort to monetise. see,

15 ideas to help keep your kids entertained

What is the point in writing a blog? why do I do it?

    My garden world in Winter

Then purely more selling if interested.

    Amazon Kindle fire deals

    Amazon kindle e readers

Amazon deals and Alexa enabled devices for the smart home

    Christmas / birthday present ideas

    2. I started my blog to write and I will continue to write. I enjoy writing poetry and writing short stories, I also enjoy the community and friendship. There are many blogs out there that are purely for the community aspect and so many are so enjoyable to read. I am not going to list any here as you know who you are.

Here is some of my fiction writing and poetry.

    Short stories

The worst day of my life

    A fork in the road

    Just one of those days

    Poetry

    The mystical city

The mannequin and the slippers poetry

    The world of blog

    3. I started writing about my children but, I am thinking that I cannot continue writing about them daily. So, I will still write about them but not every day.

    4. I have also learnt the importance of making the time to visit other peoples blogs, blogging is a huge community and a good one. Also if you do not visit other people they might never find you and you might then miss out on a good connection and possible friendship.

    5. Here are my stats on day 100, most of these numbers are Facebook and the WordPress reader. However, I have had a few visits directed from Google and Bing and other wordpress blog sites that I have posted to.

    As 17.20pm today 20/01/2019

    Views –

    October 2018 – 727 views

    November 2018 – 946 views

December 2018 – 1000 views (I have a feeling this is more 1033 views then the figures add up).

    January 2019 – 861 views

    Views Total – 3567 views

    Visitors Total – 1511 visitors

    Stats 2018

    101 posts, 451 comments, 77385 words

    Stats 2019

    24 posts (now 25), 119 comments, 11472 words

    Word Total – 88857 words

Yes without blogging I could have completed my book.

    Aim for this year

    1. To master SEO (Search engine optimisation) I am slowly getting my head around it and have about 50 posts still to work back through.
    2. To look again at my Pinterest account. People tend to repin from my other blogs and posts board rather then my own. However last night someone I do not know saved one of my more helping posts with a canva vertical image.
    3. I need to make a schedule of when I am posting and maybe ideas of what to write about.  Keeping up with my poetry and short stories plus the kids.
    4. I need to continue writing my book. I recently found Chapter buzz and then submitted my Secret time warp story to it, in an effort to maybe turn that into a book as well, one day.

    5. I also need to make time to read more.  Blogging daily has meant hardly any reading.  I bought myself a Kindle at Christmas and I have hardly looked at it.

So on with the blog and thankyou to all of you who have helped, followed and supported me and answered all my questions. I really appreciate  all your help and friendship.
