Saturday morning..

Does a weekend really mean time off work? Maybe it is time away from paid work, but are weekends harder then the working week?  Today I have my 5 year old talking obsessively, she has homework but climbing the furniture and making a mess is more appealing.  My 7 year old just wants to lie with his nose stuck to the ipad.  The chores of homework whilst trying to find time to rest my mind. Does mummy really need to rest? The housework is screaming at me as always. I am sat here as life is buzzing around me. Does anyone else feel this sense of helplessness and exhaustion?  The hill I feel I am climbing does not get any easier.

Life gives us so many challenges as we walk through it, everyday different and rarely easy. It does not matter what we do in life, we all have our own struggles and problems.  My 5 year old climbing the cupboards and now attempting to take scissors, tape measure, sellotape and paper into the garden, not sure what she is trying to do but I need to follow her. All I really want to do is sit here quietly with my coffee.

Why do kids climb? And why do they love to not do as you ask?  They have minds of their own. Trying to be independent but at 5 and 7 not recognising the dangers around them.  Forever pushing their boundaries and forcing the on going tension between mum and child. I look at my two and feel very grateful and proud that I am their mummy.  However when they are acting out in public there are times when I would love just to hide. The stress of “I want”  against the need to discipline and not give them everything.  Could not afford to buy everything, but in the eyes of my 7 year old I am the worse mum for refusing him another lego set.  In sets the mummy guilt, it will be Christmas soon.  I am sure I am not the only mummy who has this struggle, toys given to check out assistants as I am not buying it all.

So here we are Saturday morning, end of a busy working week. I have yet another pile of washing for the machine. A husband playing games on the computer.  It will be mummy that needs to enforce the kids do some homework.  Structure is important, homework does not take that long.  To my 7 year old, Roblox is far more interesting then making a Roman shield. My 5 year old I have now discovered is mending an old broken umbrella that should have been binned months ago. Productive for a Saturday morning, covered in sellotape and will not last long but she is happy.

So this all raises the question, a peaceful happy household verses the stress of removing the electronic gadgets and games and pushing them to work. I am quite happy to sit with my feet up, drink coffee all day and enjoy the peace whilst watching my 5 year olds creativity.   However if I did, nothing would get done.  So here I am back on my hamster wheel of Saturday morning and the busy weekend.
